Iran Could Work With Cyprus in Gas Sector

Election of new Iranian president this month has raised the prospects of collaboration between Iran and Cyprus in the field of natural gas, Cyprus Mail quoted Iran’s Ambassador to Nicosia as saying.

Relations between the two countries have had their up and downs in recent times.

“We have a lot of experience, know-how and investment in oil and gas and have the second largest gas reserve in the world. So we can have very good cooperation (with Cyprus), not only to produce gas but also to make Cyprus a country which can be considered as a gate for exporting gas to Europe,” said Ali Akbar Rezaei, Cyprus Mail reported.

However Rezaei pointed that this would largely depend of Iran’s relation with EU.

“If there is a breakthrough in relations, which I am very hopeful to see happen after the recent election in Iran, then the possibilities are there and we can expand our cooperation in oil and gas with Cyprus to a large extent,” he was quoted by Cyprus Mail as saying.
