Industry to Tackle “Myths versus Facts” on Shale Gas

The International Gas Union is taking aim at what it sees as misconceptions concerning shale gas and the process of hydraulic fracturing.

The organization, whose member associations and entities in 77 countries account for over 95% of the natural gas traded around the world, has initiated a project to publish a report on "Myths vs Facts on Shale Gas.”

The report, to be presented at the 25th World Gas Conference (WGC2012) to be held in Kuala Lumpur this upcoming June, will deal with production and distribution of this unconventional gas resource and challenge perceptions on subjects including shale gas and water usage and on the disclosure of hydraulic fracturing fluids.

“The report aims to clear common myths and misconceptions which have led some unconventional gas developments to be put on hold,” said Mr Ho Sook Wah, Chairman, Coordination Committee 2009-2012, International Gas Union.

“As the voice of the industry, the IGU hopes that this information will provide greater transparency and spur healthy discussions, thus furthering the exploration and utilisation of gas across the entire value chain,” Mr Ho continued.
