India's Dependence on LNG Remains Over 50%

LNG imports accounted for 54% of India’s total gas demand in June, which stood at 4.52bn m3, according to latest data published by Indian oil ministry's Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC). In May LNG imports accounted for 55% of total demand.

Fertiliser, power and city gas distribution segments were the top three consumers of gas that month. India's fertiliser manufacturers were the biggest consumers, taking 1.26bn mof which imported LNG accounted for 0.7bn m3. The power sector came next with 1bn m3, of which 0.69bn m3 was imported LNG. The city gas sector consumed 735mn mof gas in June, of which imported LNG was 0.331bn m3.

India’s LNG imports saw year on year increase for the fourth straight month in June as domestic gas demand remained robust. India imported the equivalent to 2.51bn m3 of pipeline gas in the form of LNG (about 1.86mn metric tons), up 39% year on year, with Petronet LNG, Gail, Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation, Reliance Industries, Indian Oil Corporation, Torrent Power and BPCL the main importers that month.
