Indian Industry Body Asks Government to Back Sub-sea Gas Pipeline from Middle east

Indian industry body Assocham has asked country’s oil ministry to support a sub-sea natural gas pipeline project being developed by South Asia Gas Enterprises (SAGE), news agency Press Trust of India reported Tuesday.

“An underwater project to bring natural gas directly from the Middle East to India being developed by a global consortium led by SAGE may be examined for consideration of grant to support the project,” Press Trust quoted from a letter Assocham wrote to Petroleum & Natural Gas Minister Veerappa Moily.

The industry body believes that the subsea natural gas pipeline from the Middle East to India has assumed more significance as other gas line projects like Iran-Pakistan-India (IPI) and TAPI have made little progress, Press Trust said.

“One of the important features of this pipeline corridor is that it will completely bypass Pakistan thus averting major threat perception from fundamentalist elements and resultant supply disruption,” Assocham Secretary General D S Rawat said.

SAGE has undertaken a project called "Middle East to India Deepwater Pipeline (MEIDP)", which will connect the gas rich Gulf & Middle East regions to India, for the transportation of natural gas to secure India´s energy needs.

SAGE is promoted by the New Delhi based Siddho Mal Group, in joint venture with a UK-based Deepwater Technology Company.
