India, Canada Plan to Further Cement Energy Cooperation

India and Canada discussed plans to further enhance cooperation in energy sector.

Greg Rickford, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources, and Dharmendra Pradhan, India’s Petroleum Minister, met in Calgary on Sunday during the 2nd India-Canada Ministerial Energy Dialogue to discuss enhancing energy cooperation between the two countries in the areas of oil, natural gas, clean energy, power transmission and skill development.

They highlighted Canada and India’s growing energy partnership, by strengthening government to government and business to business relationships.

India has already a growing presence in Canadian energy space. In March 2014, Indian Oil Corporation Ltd acquired 10 percent participating interest in integrated LNG project - Pacific Northwest LNG proposed at Lelu Island, British Columbia.  Also, in 2009, India received Canadian oil for the first time and in 2014, India received over 1 500 barrels of Canadian crude per day.

Canada could potentially supply a significant amount of the 44 billion cubic metres of natural gas that India is forecasted to import annually by 2025.
