Hyundai Builds LNG-Fuelled Bulk Carriers

South Korea’s Hyundai Samho Heavy Industries on December 11 said it had built and named two LNG-powered bulk carriers.

HL Eco and HL Green are the first two of four vessels that will have the same design. The 180,000-metric ton bulk carriers have a length of 292 m and a breadth of 45 m. Their LNG fuel tanks have a storage capacity of 1,600 m3, which the company said is the largest in the world. The carriers are equipped with two LNG tanks.

Hyundai Samho said the LNG-fuelled carriers will reduce sulphur oxides and fine dust by 99%, nitrogen oxides by up to 85%, and greenhouse gas emissions by 30% compared with existing ships.

The first two vessels are scheduled to be delivered this month, followed by the other two by March 2022. They will make 10 round trips a year between South Korea and Australia each.
