The National Weather Service forecasts heavy snow for higher elevations in the Pacific Northwest, though parts of the Mississippi and Ohio river valleys are expecting temperatures well above average.

Gusty winds and rains are expected from the Central Plains into the Great Lakes region, with isolated pockets of freezing rain possible. Some of the wind hazards are similar to last week, when a devastating tornado left nearly a hundred people dead in Kentucky.

The federal government on December 16, meanwhile, issues data on natural gas inventories. A mild winter so far for the United States has suppressed demand for natural gas, keeping Henry Hub well below October highs above $6/mn Btu.
