This is an excerpt from a Congressional Testimony of Jason E. Bordoff, published by thCenter on Global Energy Policy at Columbia University on May 17, 2017.

Testifying this morning before the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Western Hemisphere, CGEP Director Jason Bordoff discussed energy opportunities that exist in South America and why it is in the national interest of the United States to help this region develop its energy sector in order to increase regional political stability and economic growth, promote global energy market stability, open up new opportunities for investment of foreign capital from the US and elsewhere in the region, and make more rapid progress to develop clean energy sources and address climate change.

In his testimony, Bordoff (1) summarized the importance of South America to the global energy system; (2) discussed the region’s importance as an energy trading partner of the US; (3) provided an overview of opportunities for oil and gas and (4) of renewable energy in the region; and (5) offered thoughts on key areas of focus and potential partnership with the US if South America is to realize its energy opportunities.
