Gimi FLNG arrives at Greater Tortue Ahmeyim LNG project site

BP announced on February 15 that the floating LNG (FLNG) vessel, Gimi, has reached the site of the Greater Tortue Ahmeyim (GTA) LNG project situated on the maritime border of Mauritania and Senegal.

The Greater Tortue Ahmeyim field, positioned 120 km offshore in water depths of 2,850 meters, stands as one of the deepest subsea developments in Africa. The Phase 1 development aims to export gas to a floating production, storage, and offloading (FPSO) facility located approximately 40 km offshore. At this facility, the gas will undergo processing and separation of liquids before being transported to FLNG facilities positioned 10 km offshore. Once operational, Phase 1 is expected to produce approximately 2.3 million tonnes/year of LNG.

The Gimi FLNG vessel, owned and operated by Golar LNG, embarked on its journey from Singapore in November 2023. It can store up to 125,000m3 of LNG.

In February of the previous year, BP and its partners, including PETROSEN, Société Mauritanienne des Hydrocarbures (SMH), and Kosmos Energy, confirmed the development concept for the second phase of the GTA LNG project. This development, known as GTA Phase 2 expansion project (GTA2), will be evaluated for a gravity-based structure (GBS) as the foundation, with an anticipated total capacity ranging between 2.5-3mn tonnes/year.
