Germany's Essberger orders LNG-fuelled chemical tankers

German shipowner John T. Essberger has ordered four 6,600-dwt stainless steel parcel chemical tankers that will have dual-fuel LNG propulsion, it said on May 19.

The IMO Type-II, certified Finnish/Swedish 1A ice class vessels will be built by China Merchants Jinling Shipyard Dingheng and delivered starting in 2023. Essberger has an option to order four more under the contract. The ships will be operated by E&S Tankers, a joint venture between Essberger and Stolt Tankers.

During cargo operations, the tankers can be powered with electricity from the shore.

The German Federal Ministry of Transport and Digital Infrastructure will subsidise the project as part of the German government's Mobility and Fuel Strategy, providing grants of up to €1.58mn ($1.9mn) for each vessel.
