Germany’s Wingas Asks Government Focus on Gas for Heat, Power Generation

Germany’s Wingas, the joint venture between BASF and Gazprom, said that gas offers advantage for electricity generation in the medium and long term, arguing that Germany’s energy policies need gas in the energy mix to strike the right balance between climate targets and energy affordability. 

“Natural gas in particular offers a wide range of possibilities for taking climate protection forward with measures that also make good economic sense. Natural gas is the most environmentally friendly of the traditional energy sources and can thus help to cut back CO2 emissions efficiently and cost-effectively,” Wingas Managing Director Ludwig Möhring said on Tuesday.

The company also advocated a smart use of gas for heat generation, saying that the simplest solution for reducing emission is to install new natural-gas-based condensing boiler technology.  

“With the annual costs of Germany’s energy transition running into billions, any future climate protection measures will only be accepted if further reductions in emissions remain affordable. So what we need is an energy supply that quite literally doesn’t cost the earth – neither ecologically nor financially.”
