Germany calls for gas pipeline from Portugal

German chancellor Olaf Scholz on August 11 called for the construction of a pipeline from Portugal to central Europe, to strengthen the continent's energy security and reduce reliance on Russian gas.

The proposed pipeline would run through Spain and France, enabling central Europe to access the Iberian peninsula's under-utilised LNG regasification capacity. Spanish energy minister Teresa Ribera said on August 12 that the link could be ready to operate in less than a year's time, and Portugal's prime minister Antonio Costa backed Scholz's statement saying it "reinforces the pressure on the European institutions to unblock this situation once and for all."
