German Uniper Invites Binding Bids for LNG Terminal

Uniper is inviting binding bids for capacity at its planned 9.78bn m³/yr floating  LNG terminal in the German port of Wilhelmshaven, the German utility said August 31. The process will start on September 14. The non-binding phase of the open season process began in May 2019 and already found great interest among market players, it said.

Uniper said the project would make an important contribution to the further diversification of German gas supplies and also to the security of supply and long-term competitiveness of gas supplies in Germany and Europe. It hopes to be able to land, store and regasify LNG there within the next five years.

Wilhelmshaven can accept LNG tankers of all sizes and tide levels, Uniper said. As well as regasification, the FSRU will also offer  LNG reloading and bunkering facilities. It is also just 30 km from the high-pressure grid.

The final investment decision on the terminal's construction will be taken based on sufficient demand from market participants and economic viability – provided that all necessary public approval and permitting processes are concluded successfully, the company said. The government is now reviewing an environmental impact assessment, it said.
