German Firm to Study Bangladesh's Shale Potential

Government of Bangladesh has appointed German firm DMT GmbH & Co. KG to study the country's shale gas potential, a top government official said last week, Financial Express reported.

DMT GmbH has been asked to submit its report by October next, he said. The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide funds to the firm for conducting the study.

The German firm would prepare the report, containing its comments and recommendations on exploring Bangladesh's shale gas potential and utilising the new resources, the HCU DG said.

"Bangladesh with its rich geological information relating to natural gas has a better chance for examining the data in the search for shale gas," the newspaper quoted Professor Ijaz Hossain of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET).

Bangladesh urgently needs new energy supplies to feed its growing economy.
