Geospace in partnership to develop CCS monitoring

Houston’s Geospace Technologies said October 28 it and two of its subsidiaries, including Geospace Technologies Canada, had created a joint industry partnership (JIP) with Carbon Management Canada (CMC) to develop carbon storage monitoring technologies.

The partnership will feature the deployment of SADAR (seismic acoustic detection and ranging) technology to monitor the performance of CO2 storage by carbon capture and storage (CCS) operators.

“This JIP will refine and validate the performance of passive seismic technologies for real-time monitoring of underground containment operations,” Geospace said. “Ensuring stored CO2 can be accurately monitored helps gas storage companies reduce their risk and increase their operational efficiencies.”

The JIP marks the first time that compact phased seismic arrays for carbon storage monitoring will be studied, said Don Lawton, director of CMC’s Containment and Monitoring Institute.

“As the world moves forward developing large-scale CO2 storage projects, we’ll need passive seismic technologies, like the one being developed by Geospace, to monitor injection operations and help verify secure storage of the CO2,” he said.

CMC is a national, not-for-profit organisation providing emissions reduction solutions and support to Canadian industry and the research community. Geospace is a leading designer and manufacturer of seismic instruments and equipment.
