Gazprom, INK to extract lithium from Kovyktinskoye field
Russian producers Gazprom and Irkutsk Oil Co (INK) have signed a memorandum to extract lithium from the giant Kovyktinskoye gas field in the Irkutsk region, the companies said on October 7.
The associated water found underground at the Kovyktinskoye field contains high concentrations of lithium that can be used in various industries, including the production of batteries for electronic equipment and electric cars. INK has technology for processing lithium-containing associated water that it has developed at its own deposits in Irkutsk.

Kovyktinskoye contains 1.8 trillion m3 of gas, according to Gazprom, making it one of the largest gas deposits in east Siberia. It is due to come online in the mid-2020s and pump up to 27bn m3/year to China, complementing supply from the Chayandinskoye field which has been in operation since late 2019.
