Turkmenistan applies to join WTO

Turkmenistan has formally applied to join the World Trade Organisation (WTO), the trade body said on November 24, making it the last former Soviet state to take this step.

Turkmenistan has the fourth largest proven gas reserves in the world, estimated by BP at 13.6bn m3, and it is a key supplier of the fuel to China. The country has long held ambitions to develop additional pipelines to Europe and southeast Asia, but has struggled to secure the necessary financing and political support abroad.

Turkmenistan became an observer of the WTO in 2020, but acquiring full membership typically takes years. However, the country has asked for an initial decision to be taken at the WTO's 12th ministerial conference, scheduled for November 30-December 3.
