Galilee Accelerates Queensland CBM Project

Australian oil and gas explorer Galilee Energy November 27 said initial drilling at Kumbarilla gas project in Queensland has been accelerated more than one year ahead of schedule with three core- holes planned to be drilled in Q1 2020.

The acreage was made available for tender as part of the Queensland government’s 2019 release of new petroleum resource areas and was officially granted to Galilee, effective August 1, 2019. Kumbarilla is a 384km2 exploration tenure with dual prospectivity in both Walloon Subgroup coalbed methane (CBM) fairway and the oil and gas prone eastern flank of the Taroom Trough in the Bowen Basin, Galilee said.

According to the company, the three wells will exclusively target the interpreted Walloon Subgroup CBM ‘sweet spot’, where prospectivity is interpreted to be highest. Galilee expects this initial programme will provide an early definition of the CBM potential at Kumbarilla and support the additional acceleration of the subsequent exploration programme and in turn, fast-track maturation of the contingent resource base to reserves ahead of schedule.

In addition to the accelerated core-hole programme, 667 km of 2D regional seismic reprocessing is also nearing completion, the company said.
