French Senate Proposes Fracking for Scientific Purposes

Legislation approved by the French lower house prohibiting hydraulic fracturing in unconventional resource exploration and exploitation moves to the Senate for consideration on Wednesday, June 1st.

During the committee stage last week, senators proposed to make amendments to the text adopted by the National Assembly on May 11th.

The most significant change provides for "the execution, after a public inquiry, projects for scientific purposes to evaluate the technique of hydraulic fracturing or alternative techniques."

The Senate has also established a "national commission guidance, monitoring and evaluation techniques of exploration and exploitation of hydrocarbon liquids and gases, which will bring together government representatives, local authorities, associations, employees and managers of companies involved.
