French CMA CGM Launches LNG-Powered Containership

French shipping firm CMA CGM September 25 launched the “world’s largest” 23,000 x 20-ft equivalent units (teu) LNG-powered containership at Shanghai Jiangnan-Changxing Shipyard, it said the same day.

In 2017, the company had announced its decision to order nine 23,000 teu containerships that would be powered by LNG. “With the launching of the first 23,000 teu ship powered by liquefied natural gas, we demonstrate that energy transition can be effectively successful in our industry if all the players work together. It paves the way to a global shipping approach where economic growth and competitiveness can coexist with sustainability and the fight against climate change,” CMA CGM chairman Rodolphe Saade said.

The company said that LNG helps to reduce emissions of sulphur oxides and fine particles by 99%; nitrogen oxides emissions by up to 85%; and carbon dioxide emissions by around 20%.

The vessel named Jacques Saade will also be equipped with a smart system to manage ventilation for the reefer containers carried in the hold, the company said.

One teu is 20 ft long by 8 ft wide by 8.5 ft high.
