Southern Energy hails "far superior" flow results at Gwinville

Southern Energy has completed early flowback testing at its Gwinville oil and gas field in Mississippi, and the results have demonstrated significantly better flows than predecessors, the company said on June 9.

Well GH 19-3 #2 is currently flowing at a "highly restricted flowing pressure" at around 7.7 mn ft3/day. The upshot is a 60% increase in Southern Energy's overall production to 3,175 barrels of oil equivalent/day, of which 96% is gas.

A new well completion design was leveraged for the drilling work. The third-generation structure boosted the stage count of Southern Energy's well by more than 275%, and the proppant concentration by more than 40%.

"Initial flowback performance suggests that the increased completion intensity is having a very positive result," the company said.

Southern Energy CEO and president Ian Atkinson said the success of new technology bodes well for business at a time when gas prices are nearing "14-year highs." Southern also announced investors had largely lapped up its latest share offering, which raised total proceeds of around C$1.7mn ($1.4mn) to the company.

Atkinson added: "The flowback results from the GH 19-3 #2 well are evidence of how our team has successfully used modern technology to revitalise these significantly under-developed conventional assets in the Gulf Coast area."
