Flow of Qatari Gas into Bangladesh Grid Delayed: Report
Supplies of regasified LNG to Bangladesh’s grid have been delayed due to bad weather, according to a media report. The supplies were expected to commence July 4.
An official from state-owned Petrobangla told The Independent that all the required work is complete but inclement weather in the Bay of Bengal delayed the start of gas supplies. US-based Excelerate Energy has brought in the country's first FSRU, named Excellence, after loading a 136,009 m3 LNG cargo from Qatar's RasGas on April 24.
Last week, Rupantarita Prakritik Gas Company managing director Md Qamruzzaman said that the LNG imported from Qatar will be regasified and about 350mn ft3/d of gas will be added to the national grid from July 4. Speaking to The Independent July 3, Quamruzzaman said, “We don’t want to rush as there was bad weather in the sea. Hopefully, the supply will start within a week.”
With economy growing at a fast clip, demand for Bangladesh is expanding at a rapid rate. As local gas supplies are not able to meet demand, the government is focusing on increasing the imports of LNG. Recently, a government official said country’s first land-based terminal is expected to be ready by 2024-2025.
