Finland's Wartsila Wins Order for Ship LNG Systems

Wartsila has been hired to provide LNG propulsion and storage systems for coastal cargo vessels under construction at the WuHu shipyard in China, the Finnish tech group said on January 13.

The four ships were ordered by Netherlands-based Wijnne & Barends Chartering. According to Wartsila, they will be among the first of their type to be fuelled with LNG. The company said it had developed a customised solution to install its LNGPac storage and fuel supply system below deck without compromising the vessels’ limited cargo space.

The ships will also each have a Wartsila 34DF dual-fuel main engine, a Wartsila gearbox and a Wartsila controlled pitch propeller (CPP) with high-pressure nozzle.

This equipment will be delivered to the WuHu yard in the fourth quarter of 2020, and the first vessel will be delivered in the autumn of 2021. The vessels will operate in the Baltic and North Seas.

Wijnne & Barends previously ordered six other vessels from the Chinese shipbuilders that are also under development. These too will be equipped with Wartsila main engines and CPPs.
