Exxon to Look for More Gas in Australia’s Bass Straits

ExxonMobil has plans to look for more gas in Australia’s Bass Straits gas fields to ensure long term supplies, company’s chairman Richard Owen told the Gippsland Times.

Currently, the company and its joint venture partner Ignite Energy Resources are exploring for natural gas in the deeper coal seams of the Gippsland Basin.

He dismissed the likelihood of Esso selling gas for export as LNG from Gladstone as ExxonMobil was not involved in those projects, Gippsland Times said.

"All our gas is sold into Australian markets, but I can't guarantee no molecule of gas from here does not end up in Queensland," he said.

He said more exploration and investment is needed in Gippsland Basin.

Owen emphasised there was no fracking being done, and little use of, or impact on water aquifers, Gippsland Times said.
