Exxon Starts Drilling at Hides Gas Field in PNG

Esso Highland, a subsidiary of ExxonMobil, has commenced drilling for the PNG LNG Project at the Hides natural gas field.

The field is located in the Southern Highlands Province of Papua New Guinea.

"The start of our drilling program is a key step in meeting our goal of first LNG deliveries in 2014," drilling manager Jim McDermott said in a statement on Monday, News Nine reported.

The company is using a specially made Nabors Rig 702 to do the drill the first well, which it says is designed to withstand earthquakes. A second rig to be used in the PNG LNG Project drilling program has arrived in PNG and is currently being transported to the Hides area.

The project is expected to cost $A16 billion.
