Exxon Plays Leading Role in Unconventional Gas

ExxonMobil is positioning itself as a leader in unconventional gas development.

In a presentation made by at the Gastech conference  in Amsterdam, Linda DuCharme, Director of Europe, Russia and Caspian for ExxonMobil Gas & Power, discussed the growth of unconventional gas.

“In 2000, the production of unconventional resources was essentially non-existent. The growth of unconventional gas is a prime example of how technology has enabled to energy resources to be adapted to the world’s changing needs.

While it will be years before the production of unconventional resources will be available in Europe, we know the technology to be safe and proven."

ExxonMobil has commenced drilling in both Poland, were it is drilling its second shale gas well and in Germany, where it has drilled four shale gas wells and two CBM wells according to Ducharme.

Referring to Exxon Mobil’s July 2010 acquisition of XTO, a leader in shale exploration, DuCharme said, “We hope to apply shale technologies currently in use in the US to accelerate E&P activity in Europe. We’ve learned a lot already from XTO. One example is how XTO is applying information technology. Every XTO employee has at their desktop access to real-time production data from every single of their 19,000 production wells. You can imagine how they can use this data to quickly evaluate a new well design or a lease acquisition. The real exciting possibility is to take XTO’s expertise and combine it with ExxonMobil’s scale, operating discipline and financial strength and apply it for unconventional resources outside of North America. We expect Europe to be a significant part of this future activity.”

In North America,  ExxonMobil is involved in the Marcellus, Eagle Ford, Barnett, Fayetteville, Woodford and Haynesville/Bossier shale plays, as well as the Horn River shale gas deposit in the northeast British Columbia.

In addition to Poland, and Germany, ExxonMobil has shale gas plays in Colombia and Argentina, tight gas opportunities in Germany and China and coal-bed methane in Indonesia.
