European Fleet Operators Increasingly Turning to Natural Gas Vehicles

Natural gas holds great potential as a transport fuel, offering both economic and environmental benefits.

Natural gas vehicles in Europe have made huge strides over the past years, with CNG being used for light and medium-duty vehicles such as buses and garbage trucks and LNG offered primarily as a fuel for heavy-duty vehicles.

However, industry hope to accelerate that progress in Europe, which has a 36% of the global volume of all vehicles, but only a 10% share of the global volume of NGVs.

A particular focus is on the deployment of natural gas vehicles in the fleet market. The transport industry accounts for around 25 per cent of Europe's total carbon dioxide emissions. In addition to being cheaper, natural gas burned in trucks emits as much as 25 percent less carbon dioxide, as well as almost eliminating particulate matter and sulfur dioxide produced by diesel-powered vehicles.

Major operators, particularly in the Netherlands, are conducting successful trials with LNG and major brands such as UPS and Coca Cola are making the transition to NGV powered fleets.

FC Business Intelligence has produced a complimentary whitepaper that provides key insights into the challenges and opportunities in developing a natural gas vehicle fleet market in Europe. The whitepaper provides the thoughts of key fleet operators and NGV organisations including UPS, Simon Loos Logistics, Gazprom and Clean Fuels Consulting and:

  • Exclusive first hand insight on the pioneering LNG and Biomethane projects at UPS and Simon Loos Logistics
  • Fleet operators’ perspectives on the major challenges facing NGV market development across Europe
  • Key understanding of the major strategies being employed by the NGV industry in Europe to overcome the chicken or egg dilemma
