Europe, Cyprus Discuss Gas Problems with Turkey

President of the European Council Herman Van Rompuy met with Cyprus’ President Nicos Anastasiades to speak about the relationship between Turkey and Cyprus in the gas sector.

‘The discussion focused on the situation created following the Turkish Navtex and the intention by Turkey to violate the sovereign rights of the Republic of Cyprus, in combination with the fact that the drilling by Eni-Kogas is underway within the Exclusive Economic Zone of the Republic of Cyprus,’ reads the note released on Friday.

Van Rompuy and Anastasiades decided to meet next week in Brussels, continuing the talks held on the sidelines of the second day of the 10th ASEM Summit in Milan.

‘At the meetings, the need to respect the sovereign rights of an EU member state which acts according to the rules of international law and the Convention on the Law of the Sea, was reaffirmed. Moreover, the need for the uninterrupted continuation of the drilling within the EEZ of the Republic of Cyprus, was stressed.’
