Equinor Makes Minor Gas Find

Norway's Equinor has made a "minor" gas discovery in the Norwegian Sea, the Norwegian Petroleum Directorate (NPD) reported on November 2.

The company drilled a wildcat well around 9 km east of the Maria field, operated by Germany's Wintershall Dea. The well encountered a 9-m gas column in the late Cretaceous Lange formation. Preliminary estimates put the size of the find at between 0.5 and 1.6bn m3.

This is the first well to be drilled at Equinor's production licence 263 D. The company operates the licence with a 60% stake, while partners Lime Petroleum and Pandion Energy each have 20% shares.

The well was drilled to a depth of 3,518 m, in waters 295 m deep. The West Hercules semi-submersible rig used to complete it is moving on to sink a wildcat well at Equinor's production licence 960 in the Barents Sea.
