Entergy plans 1.2-GW gas-hydrogen plant in Texas

US energy firm Entergy announced on July 29 it was seeking approval to build a 1.215-GW power plant in Orange county in Texas capable of running on both natural gas and hydrogen.

The station would be positioned near Bridge city, capable of supplying power for more than 230,000 homes. Entergy plans to file a request for approval for the project with Texas' public utility commission in the coming months, and aims to start construction in 2023 and bring the plant online by the summer of 2026.

Entergy estimates that the plant will bring about a $1.8bn economic benefit for the region.

"Southeast Texas is well-positioned to play a key role in the transition to increased use of hydrogen in electric generation," Entergy CEO Sallie Rainer commented. "Our region is home to hydrogen producers, pipelines, storage and industrial users."

Entergy has a power generation capacity of around 30 GW, delivering electricity to 3mn customers in Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas.
