Eni, Sonatrach review hydrogen opportunities
Italian energy company Eni said July 7 it would work in Algeria alongside state-owned Sonatrach on a pilot project to produce green hydrogen.
During a meeting in Algiers, both sides said they agreed to move quickly on advancing progress on a memorandum of understanding from March that focuses on hydrogen production.

The companies said they would examine the commercial feasibility of a pilot project using electricity from wind and solar facilities to electrolyse water, splitting it into hydrogen and oxygen.
“In addition, in order to preserve the country's water resources, the use of water produced by oil fields will be evaluated for the electrolysis processes necessary for the production of hydrogen, appropriately treated through dedicated plants,” they said.
No timeline for project development was given.
Eni has a long track record in the Algerian energy sector and is one of the country’s largest suppliers of oil and gas.
In June, Eni and Sonatrach said they were exploring initiatives related to bio-refining, renewable energy projects and other international opportunities.
