Eni, Saipem Team up for Decarbonisation Projects

Eni has signed a memorandum of understanding with Italian gas grid operator Saipem on identifying and engineering decarbonisation initiatives and projects in Italy, the companies said on December 9. The pair's main focus will be on carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS), aimed at decarbonising energy-intense industry in the country.

Under the accord, Eni and Saipem may also take part in EU-financed programmes as part of the bloc's Green Deal Strategy, including those funded from its post-Covid-19 recovery fund.

Saipem will bring its experience in COcapture to the partnership, having designed more than 70 plants for its capture over the years, as well as 40 for its transformation into urea. Eni said it wanted "to strengthen its leadership in the energy transition process" and provide its "unique skills and expertise in managing production processes and in the fight against climate change."
