Engie to build first biogas-to-grid unit in UK

Storengy, a gas storage operator owned by France's Engie, is set to build its first biogas-to-grid facility in the UK, after acquiring the project's operator Deal Farm Biogas.

The agricultural anaerobic digestion (AD) plant is expected to produce 55 GWh/year or 5mn m3 of biomethane. Construction by developer BioWatt is due to start this month, and completion is anticipated in early 2022.

"Our acquisition of Deal Farm signals our entry into the UK biomethane market. Biomethane is an important part of the energy transition and I am very excited to be putting our strategic objectives in motion," Storengy UK's managing director, Michael Gibson, said in a statement. "This diversification of our business builds on our group strengths and supports our vision to be a leading sustainable energy storage and solutions provider."

The UK hosts over 500 AD plants, 75% of which are agricultural. The government wants to treble the volume of biomethane in the grid between 2018 and 2030, as part of efforts to make the UK economy carbon neutral by 2050.
