Elengy sends France's first LNG via rail

French LNG operator Elengy has delivered LNG via rail for the first time in the country, the company said on April 2, pointing to the cost and environmental benefits of this mode of transport.

An ISO container was loaded with LNG at Elengy's regasification terminal in Fos Cavaou near Marseille in south France. It was transported via rail from the Miramas platform to a service station near Milan, Italy. The operation was carried out in partnership with French major Total.

"This success paves the way for the development of LNG transport logistics chains by rail to serve regions in France that are far from our terminals as well as other neighbouring countries," Elengy CEO Sandra Roche-Vu Quang said.

"This test gives Total the opportunity to participate in the development of a new LNG supply chain for Northern Italy, a region where demand is growing strongly and where we are leader in supply, from the Fos Cavaou terminal," Total's senior vice president for LNG, Thomas Maurisse, said in a statement. "Using transport by rail will reduce the CO2 emissions associated with the delivery of LNG and will contribute to our ambition to get to net-zero emissions by 2050.”

Elengy recently launched an open season for the 8.5bn m3/year Fos Cavaou terminal, offering capacity potentially until beyond 2045.
