Cuadrilla Confirms UK Fracking Start

Cuadrilla, the UK shale gas explorer, said October 15 it has started fracking in northwest England for the first time since 2011.

It confirmed the start of "hydraulic fracturing operations at our Preston New Road shale gas exploration site" adding that "hydraulic fracturing of both horizontal exploration wells is expected to last three months after which the flow rate of the gas will be tested.” It previously said it would begin fracking on October 13.

Pro-shale industry group, the UK Onshore Oil and Gas Association, to which Cuadrilla belongs, said October 15: "We are pleased that Cuadrilla, having met all regulatory and legislative conditions, have today begun hydraulic fracturing at their Preston New Rd site. This is excellent news for both the company and the country, marking the first step towards reducing our worrying dependence on imported gas."
