Conoco Interested in More Gas Blocks Offshore Bangladesh

ConocoPhillips is looking to acquire more gas blocks offshore Bangladesh as the country has won a favourable verdict by an international tribunal over maritime boundary dispute with neighbouring Myanmar.

The Us energy firm has recently sought exploration right in six new deep-water gas blocks in the Bay.

A report in Financial Express Bangladesh said that the company sent a letter last week to state-owned Petrobangla and discussed the issue with State Minister for Energy Muhammad Enamul Huq.

If ConocoPhillips is awarded exploration rights in six new deep-water blocks, it will get a total of nine years to carry out exploration work, with five years as a primary exploration period and two years each for the first and second extended exploration periods, said the official.

ConocoPhillips will not be able to export piped gas from these deep-water blocks.

It will, however, be able to export the gas in liquefied natural gas (LNG) form, but only if Petrobangla and any third-party domestic user refuses to lift the gas.
