Colorado company sinks $100mn into RNG

Colorado-based Vision Ridge Partners is investing $100mn to roll out development of methane sourced from landfill emissions, the company said September 28.

Vision Ridge said it formed Vision RNG, a limited-liability corporation (LLC) that would turn landfill methane into so-called renewable natural gas.

The decomposition of organic waste left in landfills releases methane that can be utilised for power and other resources. The LLC will work with landfill owners to develop the necessary infrastructure to capture and process landfill emissions for that purpose.

The company said it would “provide solutions for landfill sites previously considered too small for viable projects and enable landfill owners to repurpose waste materials into a sustainable energy source for today’s consumers, while addressing the adverse environmental impacts of their landfill sites.”

Rich in gas reserves, but environmentally conscious, Colorado has been making strides on cleaner energy.

The US Department of Energy last year awarded $1.5mn in funding to a commercial-scale carbon capture and storage (CCS) project in Colorado, led by French company TotalEnergies.

The federal funds helped pay for a feasibility study on the planned facility, expected to capture up to 2mn metric tons/yr of CO2 directly from the Holcim cement plant and a gas-fired steam generator. The CO2 will be sequestered underground by Occidental, whose Oxy Low Carbon Ventures subsidiary is also a project partner.
