Cobra, Sener hired to build German LNG terminal

Gasunie and RWE have hired Spain's Sener and the Cobra subsidiary of France's Vinci for engineering, procurement and construction work on an LNG regasification terminal in the German port of Brunsbuttel.

The German LNG Terminal (GLNG) partnership between Gasunie and RWE has also entered deals with ConocoPhillips, Ineos and RWE to secure them as foundational customers of the facility, which will have an initial capacity of 8bn m3/year when it starts up in 2026. This capacity can be expanded to 10bn m3/yr.

"GLNG is delighted to announce the realisation of these critical steps towards developing the import terminal at Brunsbuttel, which is a key strategic project for Germany and the region," GLNG managing director Michael Kleemiss said in a statement.

Germany is developing a raft of LNG regasification to offset recent losses in Russian gas and wean itself off dependence on Russia in the long term. While GLNG is a longer term prospect, the country is also procuring floating regasification and storage units (FSRUs) to obtain gas as soon as this winter. Germany has announced plans to secure no less than six FSRUs.
