China's First Coal to Gas Project Starts

China’s first coal gasification project’s first phase has been completed and will commence gas supply to Beijing at the end of this year, Xinhua reported citing project officials.

The Hexigten coal gasification project, located in Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region, began construction in 2009.

Datang Energy Chemical Company Ltd., Beijing Gas Company, China Datang and Tianjin Jinneng jointly invested in the project.

According to Xinhua, first phase is capable of producing 1.33 billion cubic meters of gas each year. The project will be completed in three phases with a total capacity of 4 billion cubic meters annually.

The second phase is currently under construction, Xinhua said.

The total production capacity of under-construction coal gasification projects in Inner Mongolia has reached 17.6 billion cubic meters.

Another five gasification projects in the region, for which preparatory work has been approved, have a combined capacity of 20 billion cubic meters, said Xinhua.
