Chevron to file optimised development plan for Aphrodite by year-end

Chevron will present an optimised development plan for the Aphrodite gas field off Cyprus by the end of this year, the Cypriot energy ministry reported on July 21.

The US major will also drill a well at the field in the coming months, the ministry said, following talks with the company.

Aphrodite was discovered in 2011, and its previous operator Noble Energy secured a licence to develop the field in November 2019, anticipating first gas in 2025. Noble was taken over by Chevron the following year.

The existing development plan envisions the deployment of a floating production facility tied to five wells with a maximum output of 800mn ft3/day. This gas would be delivered via a newbuild pipeline to Egypt, where it could be liquefied for export to Europe and other markets.

"Taking into account the prevailing energy environment and the potential for Cyprus and the wider east Mediterranean to significantly contribute to Europe's security of supply and diversification of sources, both parties remain committed to working together in order to expedite the timing of first gas from Aphrodite to Egypt and to European markets," the ministry said in a statement.
