Regulator Consults First Nations on Alberta Pipe Boost

Canadian regulator National Energy Board (NEB) has begun oral knowledge sessions with First Nations representatives for the Nova Gas Transmission (NGTL) 2021 system expansion project.

The oral sessions began in Grande Prairie on April 30 and will conclude in Calgary May 13-17.

NGTL's C$2.3bn (US$1.7bn) 2021 expansion project consists of 344 km (214 miles) of pipeline loop extending from Grande Prairie to just northwest of Calgary and three new compressor stations, adding about 1bn ft³/day of capacity to the NGTL system. Pending regulatory approval, the new facilities will be placed in service by April 2021.

The NEB’s sessions are designed to obtain knowledge from First Nations in a way that is sensitive to their culture and which can't be shared meaningfully or adequately in writing. Over the course of six day-long sessions, the board will hear from 12 First Nations impacted by the expansion project.
