Canadian PM shuffles federal cabinet

Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau introduced a new cabinet October 26, shuffling key environment and natural resources positions.

Seamus O’Regan was moved from Natural Resources Canada to minister of labour, where he replaces Filomena Tassi.

Jonathan Wilkinson, minister of environment and climate change in the old cabinet, was installed as the new minister of Natural Resources Canada, while Steven Guilbeault, heritage minister in the old cabinet, takes over the environment and climate change file.

“Canadians need a strong and diverse cabinet to deliver on their priorities and keep Canada moving forward for everyone,” Trudeau said. “This team will finish the fight against Covid‑19, deliver on $10-a-day child care, help Canadians find a home of their own, tackle the climate crisis, and continue to advance reconciliation with indigenous peoples.”

The new cabinet includes 39 ministers, including Trudeau, an increase of two from the previous roster. And in keeping with a precedent Trudeau set when he was first elected in 2015, it includes an equal number of men and women.
