Canada’s Trican to deploy gas-fired frac spread

Canadian oilfield service firm Trican Well Service said April 19 it will deploy Canada’s first low emissions hydraulic fracturing spread later this year, using natural gas to replace diesel as fuel.

The upgraded frac spread will employ CAT Tier 4 dynamic gas blending engines, which will displace 85% of diesel with natural gas, reducing emissions of CO2 and particulates. Combined with Trican’s existing idle reduction technology, the new fracking fleet will lower overall fuel consumption and emissions, improving the sustainability of the company’s operations.

“Trican is committed to meeting the needs of our customers while supporting the responsible and sustainable development of Canada's hydrocarbon resources,” CEO Brad Fedora said. “These upgrades to Trican’s existing equipment will create the lowest emission fracturing spread in Canada, providing a transformational improvement in our service offering.”

Field trials of the new technology were completed earlier this year. In the fall, the new Tier 4 spread will be deployed for Tourmaline Oil, Canada’s largest natural gas producer, at Montney sites in northwestern Alberta and northeastern BC.

“We are very pleased to work with Trican to develop and use new technology that further supports Tourmaline’s efforts to help Canada produce the net cleanest natural gas in the world,” Tourmaline CEO Mike Rose said.
