Canada issues call for CCUS engineering studies

The Canadian government announced August 9 a new call for expressions of interest for front-end engineering and design (FEED) studies supporting carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) technologies.

In its 2021 budget, the federal government pledged to invest C$319mn (US$254mn) over seven years into research, development and demonstrations that would advance the commercialisation of CCUS technologies. Some of that funding went to establish the Energy Innovation Program, which will fund this CCUS call.

The announcement gave no details on how much funding successful applications could expect to receive.

Successful projects will increase the knowledge base for applying CCUS technologies to different types of facilities in Canada. They will be expected to support these broad outcomes:

  • Advancing engineering experience for large CCUS projects, analysing performance and costs for new technologies and informing the development of next-generation technologies;
  • Increasing the likelihood that CCUS will be developed at scale in Canada across different industries, supporting different technologies and approaches to capturing, transporting, using and storing CO2;
  • Increasing the knowledge base of applying CCUS to different industrial facilities, supporting future replications across Canada and internationally.

Applications will be accepted until September 22 and then reviewed over the next few months by an expert panel. Successful applicants will then be invited to submit full project proposals.
