Canada Invests C$6mn For CNG Fuelling Stations

The Canadian government said April 1 it would invest C$6mn (US$4.8mn) to assist in the development of three compressed natural gas (CNG) fuelling stations along the Trans-Canada Highway in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba and three in northern Ontario.

The new natural gas refuelling stations – which will be located at existing gas stops in Redcliff, Alberta; Swift Current, Saskatchewan; Prawda, Manitoba and in Nipigon, Hearst and Cochrane, in northern Ontario – will include on-site storage and easy-to-use dispensers providing all the features heavy-duty truck drivers need when refuelling.

“Natural gas is a sustainable and economical option for the transportation sector,” Jim Carr, the government’s special representative for the prairies, said in announcing the investment for the three prairie stations. “Today’s investment is helping Canadian trucking fleets adopt cleaner fuel sources without compromising their day-to-day efficiency while supporting our goal of a net-zero future.”

The federal funding, which will be provided to Envoy Energy, an Ontario-based developer of CNG and renewable natural gas fuelling facilities, will come from Natural Resources Canada’s electric vehicle and alternative fuel infrastructure deployment program, which invests in natural gas fuelling stations along key transportation routes.
