Buckeye plans green hydrogen for Bear Head LNG site

Buckeye Partners, which announced plans in May to acquire the old Bear Head LNG project in Point Tupper, Nova Scotia on Canada’s east coast, said July 13 it had completed the acquisition, and would pivot the project to produce green hydrogen and ammonia for domestic and export markets.

“Buckeye’s intention with this acquisition is to develop a large-scale green energy production, distribution and export hub,” Buckeye CEO Todd Russo said. “Given the project’s unique features and the geographic advantages of the region, including its status as one of the top locations globally for wind energy generation, we believe that this has the potential to become one the world’s premier green hydrogen production facilities.”

Now dubbed Bear Head Energy, the project will bring in partners from the on-shore and off-shore renewable energy industries to build out a large green hydrogen hub for Atlantic Canada. Ultimately, Buckeye hopes to develop 2 GW of electrolyser capacity at the site.

Bear Head LNG was originally envisioned as an 8mn metric tons/year natural gas liquefaction and export terminal but encountered a number of logistical and financial challenges along the way. It was a sister project to Magnolia LNG in the US, which was acquired by the Glenfarne Group in administration from Australia’s LNG Limited.
