Brussels proposes Azeri deal to boost gas imports: press

The European Commission has recommended a deal with Azerbaijan to boost gas flows through an expansion to the Southern Gas Corridor (SGC), but the draft MoU still needs approval from each EU member state and Azerbaijan.

Azerbaijan would need to expand SGC by 2027 to help meet the EU target to eliminate Russian gas supply by that year, according to the document. It is proposed that the expansion could as much as double the pipeline system's capacity to 20bn m3/yr capacity, to complete the project.

The draft MoU says both parties will back financing for the SGC expansion, and that such investments should enable low-carbon gas such as hydrogen to be carried in future.
