BASF Licenses Technology for Qatar Expansion

Qatar and BASF have signed a technology licence agreement for the North Field expansion project in Qatar, the German chemicals giant said April 16. BASF will provide Qatar Petroleum with the technology for gas removal and for gas treatment for the four new mega-trains of 7.8mn mt/yr LNG output. No price was disclosed. One of the technologies, Flexsorb, is owned by US ExxonMobil which has approved the licence, says BASF.

This technology is "an integral part in the production of LNG. It removes impurities such as carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulphide from the natural gas stream to enable the subsequent liquefaction process to take place. We are proud to support Qatargas in meeting its sustainability goals by providing our technologies. Over the next few years we will work very closely with Qatargas to achieve optimal results,” said BASF.

The North Field Expansion Project in Qatar comprises four new LNG mega trains. The North Field lies off the north-east shore of the Qatar peninsula and covers more than 6,000 km².
