Bangladesh to Take Another Year to Assess CBM Potential at Jamalganj Coalmines

Feasibility study to assess CBM potential at Jamalganj coalfield in Bangladesh is expected to extended by a year consequently raising the cost of the whole exercise by 17 percent, according to Dhaka Tribune, a local newspaper.   

The government decided to prospect for CBM on six acres of land at Petrobangla's Jamalganj coalfield with a view to meeting the country’s ever-growing energy demand, .

This is the first ever initiative to test CBM potential in Bangladesh.

A Petrobangla official said he was not sure the project would be completed within this extended year and might take a further year to complete, Dhaka Tribune added.

The study was supposed to be completed by March 2014. Now, it will take a further year if study starts this year.

“We are going to implement the feasibility study for the extraction of CBM at Jamalganj coalfield project by engaging an internationally reputed consulting firm using our own resources,” the general manager of Petrobangla and project director, Md Akhtaruzzaman, told the Dhaka Tribune on Saturday.

Three core wells are expected to be drilled, he said.
