Bangladesh to Fast Track LNG Import Terminal Project

Bangladesh's newly elected government has decided to fast track the development of country’s first LNG import terminal, Petrobangla Chairman Hussain Monsur told Platts.

At the first meeting of the Fast Track Project Monitoring Committee, Chaired by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina on Wednesday, it was decided government will fast-track six projects, one of them would be the LNG import terminal project, Press Information Department of Bangladesh said in a statement.

A source who attended the meeting told Platts that Petrobangla is due to submit a work plan to the EMRD by next week

Construction on the LNG terminal and import of the much needed fuel were prominent electoral promises that Hasina made during her campaign.

According to Platts Petrobangla is planning a floating LNG import terminal with a capacity to handle 5 million mt/year of LNG and a regasification capacity of at least 500,000 Mcf/d at Moheshkhali Island in the Bay of Bengal.

In November, after much delay, Bangladesh selected a US consortium comprising Astra Oil and Excelerate Energy for the project.
